Archive for family sessions

Imagine for a moment… You’ve just brought a new baby home, you want some photographs to celebrate this exciting time. But… YOU JUST HAD A BABY, so YOU’RE REALLY TIRED and no matter how many children you have, you feel pretty tapped out from the added responsibility. Nevertheless, your mama eyes are seeing so many heart warming little moments. You want to capture this time because chances are, you aren’t going to be able to remember them as best as you’d like.

That’s where I come in. I will be your mama eyes, watching for those sweet little moments. You will have the chance to sit back and enjoy it. And, if like many mamas, you are the family photographer, YOU WILL BE IN THE PHOTOS. Brilliant.

I am so grateful for clients who value the beauty that can be found in the moments at home with our children.

Here is glimpse into a morning session with a family who just expanded by one sweet, and VERY loved little brother…

The days are long, and the days are long, and the days are long…

But, wow, do they go by quickly. So for me, being present is very important. Some days, it’s just a matter of saying this day has been hard, and long, and I’ve cleaned up more food on the floor than I ever thought possible. Others, I try to take some time to just sit and watch my children. Observe them for who they are. And when I can do that, I can also see how beautiful everyday moments can be.

I love photographing these everyday moments for families. I love it because I know that by doing so we are honoring something special. We are honoring the mundane, the routine, the things that we do so often that it’s become a part of who we are as a family.  We are honoring the home as an important context to the story of our family life. We are acknowledging that brushing hair and the chaos of helping kids get dressed is as important to remember as the 4th birthday party.  Because it is these tiny day-to-day moments that we will be thinking of when we get all choked up watching our “not-at all-a-baby-anymore” child blow out her 4th birthday candles.

And with that… A small glimpse into a family session from last fall.

Being a parent has made me more aware of the passage of time than I have ever experienced before. I know how long I’ve been awake, I know how long the baby has slept (and not slept), I notice each new tooth (first with excitement and then with sleep deprived dread). Somedays I am moving quickly from task to task and others I am counting down the minutes until reinforcement arrives and I am temporarily relieved of my childcare duties.

I love photographing families at home. It’s so special to be a small part of these days. Because THESE ARE THE DAYS. The days that will string together and be the fabric of your baby’s childhood. In this case, I got to watch this sweet boy enjoy a bath in the sink with the love and adoration that only first time parents are able to give. I got to see the gentle support of a dad lying on the floor with his baby as he encourages him to do his best to get from point A to point B. I got to go with on the family evening walk to the park on a beautiful late spring day. I got to see a sweet baby notice the beautiful color of roses while his parents get to see roses anew and simultaneously take care that he doesn’t get poked by the thorns. It’s really amazing and it makes my heart so happy to create images that can feel so familiar in the moment, but will help families look back and relive the joys and to celebrate the how far they have all come as a family.

This session is the follow up to the newborn family session that precedes it. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed my time with this wonderful young family.
